The Fall

The Autumnal Equinox, Monday September 22, 2014 in the evening here in San Francisco, is upon us. Collectively we sit on the precipice of equal day and night for the briefest of moments before continuing into, slowly but surely, the increasing darkness. Autumn is also called fall and I recall asking why as a child. The answers were appropriate enough and most likely correct, particularly being raised in the Northeastern part of the US: the falling leaves. There is also a correlation with the harvest in general and the gathering of resources and the wheat from the chaff.

Another correspondence could be The Fall, as in, the infamous fall from grace of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. From the book of Genesis we see a world of perpetual life, which can be understood as perpetual light and sun, warmth and pleasure, a paradise of bounty. When that rascally serpent tempted Eve with the fruit of knowledge it set off this journey into darkness, descent, and despair. This can be viewed as the propulsion of the evolutionary journey from Creator…and the sometimes-muddled odyssey of attempting to return.

So this time of year can bring a consideration of taking inventory, psychic or otherwise, of where one is on that trek from and to paradise. It’s part of a healthy harvest mentality to take stock. Libra is herself holding the scales, encouraging it would seem the need to seek balance. In the world at large we see a massive rally in New York and other locals in support of Mother Earth. At least that’s how I choose to look at the events. It could also have been understood as a rally against those the ralliers think are undermining what is necessary for a clean, vibrant and healthy world. I am not informed enough to make a conclusion either way as to the motives, however, “for” something rather than “against”, I think, is much more empowering.

This particular Ingress of the Sun into Libra reinforces darkness as an element as the moon wanes and the dark of the New Moon arrives on Tuesday. In my experience, the New Moon is a time period of a process (a trinity) perhaps best parsed as reflection (of a certain dynamic of the past), dissolution (of what needs to be dissolved based on the reflection), and then initiation of some action or intention based on the previous steps.

Perhaps one of the themes of this New Moon is a question: what are you for? Or more precisely: What are you living for? What is the most positive expression that you can give to what you feel or sense you are here to do and, better yet, how can you serve that purpose? Libra is an area of the zodiac that becomes necessarily social (an air sign) and where ones ideas and values (Venus ruler of Libra and Taurus) are put forth and interact with others. Friends and lovers to be sure but the 7th house, Libras natural house, also correlates to enemies, and it is important to meet with, understand, and when possible find common ground (or at least some agreement) with them as well.

Take me as an example. This very print that you’re reading is an intention based on refection during the past few days. What I recognized as needing to dissolve is my fear, apprehension, and sloth in projecting my image and message. I am frantically (not really) writing to get it out in time for the Ingress of Libra by the Sun and in time for the New Moon. Why? Well, among many other factors, Jupiter, as we speak, the essence of aspirations, hope, higher purpose and reward is crossing my mid-heaven, a highly sensitive point in a chart that has to do with one’s calling (vocation, career). My intention is to practice my deep desire to reach and connect with people in the most intimate and useful way through use of the tool astrology. The action I’m using to catalyze this is not just this writing, but also the act of sending it out. That this Jupiter/mid-heaven contact co-insides closely with the New Moon tomorrow is no small matter in my consideration.

So I offer a friendly and heartfelt challenge in the next 24 hours for you to consider what it is you are living for and how you can better serve that purpose. I don’t mean to presume that you don’t know this already, at least the what are you living for part, however, the serving part is the tricky one and the one worth giving a moments (at least) pause for rumination. Luckily this can be done at any moment really, one doesn’t need a new moon or any other astrological consideration to think and act. Change is indeed a constant. There can be a thrust with intentional, timely movement though, and timing actions with certain moments can prove to be a useful ally.  Let me know how your doing with this and of course if you want to take a closer look, call or email for a session and we’ll get down to the details of the matter.
